I'm Diggin' the Library

I rely heavily on library books for my homeschooling curriculum. We can't afford to buy every book we would need. Plus we would have no space to shelve them even if we could. And so, the library is my friend. Back in Waco I had friends tell me about ordering books for hold online and then going by to pick them up. I never made it around to doing that there, but after getting my new library card here in Victoria and reading about that option again, I thought I'd give it a try. And it's a wonderful, super-fantastic, incredibly awesome service. No more looking up call numbers only to find out that the book is misplaced. No more doing that with 3 kids complaining and whining and being way too loud. Instead you browse the catalogue in the comfort of your home and order the books to be picked up at the branch of your choice. They notify you when your books are in. You go by and pick them up from specially designated shelves and go about your business of checking them out. Books from all over the city right there at your fingertips. And yesterday I received an online notice that one particular book we had checked out was due back in 2 days. I wasn't aware of this book being due because we had already taken back that group of books so I went hunting around the house for it and sure enough it was under the bed in the guest bedroom. A notice before the due date? Could it be true? Not a notice that yells at me for having one overdue, but a friendly reminder to get it in before the due date. Libraries have sure changed a lot since I was a kid. Remember the card catalogue? Subject, title or Author anyone? Those days are over. Did I mention that I'm diggin' the library?

I, too, LOVE online catalogs. That's how I do all of my research prep. I browse the Baylor and Waco libraries, write down a list of possibilities, then go look at the books, checking out those that seem to have potential. So much better than the old card catalogs!! I'm glad you're enjoying the libraries!

My most favorite feature is the ability to renew online. Don't have time to drag the three kiddos to the library for a return, just log in and extend the date. Ahhh, technology is grand... :)

oh yes, I forgot about that. And when I couldn't find that book at first, I was thinking how I could just renew it online and have a few weeks to look around for it. Very cool!

I've been meaning to comment on this post. The on-line capabilities of the library have been my friend for a while, but as one who has failed to remember exactly when each book i have is due I would like for our library to email reminders. Too cool! Glad you've discovered all the wonderful amenities.

We miss you here!!! -maria
