Last week, Clint was off at Camp Imadene, so the kids and I had an open schedule to do pretty much whatever we wanted. There were swimming lessons in the morning. But that left our afternoons free. One afternoon we ventured out an hour up island to Pat Bay. I was intrigued by the prospect of finding sand dollars during low tide. And we did. Ethan came up with the fantastic idea of skipping the sand dollars as one might skip a flat pebble across a lake. They skipped wonderfully and I even managed to get one to skip despite my being disadvantaged in the rock skipping department. The kids also loved picking up the tiny crabs that were everywhere during low tide. When the tide started to come in there were cool waves to jump in. It was nice finding a spot in the ocean that wasn't ridiculously frigid making swimming a real option. Malcolm had the most fun pointing at the sea planes coming in. He also liked the water and was way too proficient at mastering the rocks along the edge of the beach.

great post. great pictures. Malcolm's growing up. I cannot wait to spend time with you guys and get to know his personality a little more. :). I mailed songbooks to my parents for us to bring in the car with us. (I was mailing stuff to Calif so I won't have to pack it in a suitcase to take. so, i threw in songbooks. :) )

What a fun time! We've been enjoying the beach in Michigan, but there are no sand dollars.
We hadn't seen any sand dollars since we got here, but as I was reading one of those island summer guides that has a description of various activities, the one about Pat Bay mentioned people liking to go there during low tide to find the sand dollars. I was expecting little fragments like on the Texas Coast, but there were lots of nearly perfect ones. Unfortunately, Ethan pitched most of the ones we found and the one we took home with us got slightly damaged in our bag. Oh well, looks like we will have to go back. Not such a bad thing. How long are you in Michigan?
We were in MI from July 1 to July 12. The beach is on the St. Clair River, which is one of the bodies of water connecting Lake Erie and Lake Huron. Cold. Water.
