Salmon Run 2008

One very big plus of living in British Columbia is our access to really cool natural phenomena such as the salmon that swim upstream every fall to spawn in our backyard. Well, not literally our backyard, but within a 20 minute drive. A couple of weeks ago we took the kids to Goldstream Park to search for salmon. That wasn't a hard task because they were everywhere. Lots of them. Many of them already dead floating along the side of the stream or washed up on the bank. But there were plenty more still swimming toward their birth places and leaping over small rocky areas or digging holes so they could deposit their eggs. I planned a unit on fish to coincide with our in depth study of salmon and their intriguing life cycle. We made a poster of the salmon life cycle and each kid had to explain the cycle to their Daddy. I knew Ethan would retain a lot of the details. What surprised me was how much of the information Laurel remembered. Words like alevin and fry and yolk sacs. We also learned some basic fish anatomy and I have promised Ethan that we will order a preserved fish specimen so he can investigate the inside of a fish's body. Can't wait for that day. Ahh, the aroma of dead fish!

Hey, we have some cool phenomena in Waco, too. Don't tell me that you don't fondly remember the cricket invasion every fall... ;)

Very cool pictures! Isn't it funny how kids can remember facts about nature and animals, and yet can't remember to take their dirty clothes to the laundry hamper?

Hmm. Let me see. Salmon run or cricket invasion? It's a toss-up.

I really miss the texture and cadence of crunchy exoskelton. (I bet Greg and Vena are still getting this opportunity since Lansharx esecially attracts those pesky crickets.)
